Djerba: Staying on

The island of Djerba, off Tunisia's southeast coast, is home to around 1,000 of Tunisia's 3,000 Jews.

The Ghriba synagogue is thought to be the oldest functioning synagogue in the world. Djerba's Jewish community was settled by refugees fleeing the Babylonian destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BC.
